U.N. Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman wants global leaders and people to end violence against women.
The seven-month pregnant, Oscar winning actress came to U.N. headquarters to join UNIFEM executive director, Joanne Sandler, U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro and U.N. Foundation President Timothy Wirth to promote UNIFEM’s “Say NO to Violence Against Women Campaign” at a news conference at U.N. headquarters.

Ms. Kidman said that violence was probably the “most widespread human rights violation of our time” and that “One in three women will encounter violence in some way, shape or form against them in their lifetime”. And “That’s an extraordinary statistic. Yet do we ever hear it?”. She urges everyone to add their names and demand “that ending violence against women be made a top priority for governments everywhere” and encourages private sector to make contribution to the U.N. Trust Fund to End Violence against Women, which provides grants for programs in third world countries to help fight the scourge.
