Leica Portrait ~ Jonathan Mannion

A Cleveland, Ohio native, Jonathan Mannion began capturing images of up-and-coming urban music superstars after working for a year with world-renowned photographer Richard Avedon. In 1996, he launched his professional career by shooting the photographs for the classic hip-hop album Reasonable Doubt by Jay-Z. In the years since, Jonathan’s photography has grown alongside the culture he so loves, helping to visually define an era of urban music. As DJ Quik once pointed out to him, the world sees hip-hop through his eyes. However, he is modestly circumspect about his role.

I’m just a messenger, he observes, and I’ve been given a talent to document an extremely important era of music history. I have a love for hip-hop that goes back to when I was a teenager, and I feel blessed to have had the chance to shoot the artists I’ve worked with. I’ve had the opportunity to grow with them and the photos I’ve shot over the years have become visual bullet points of their creative evolution and mine.

Jay-Z @ The Oprah Magazine

In the summer, when Oprah Winfrey was seen palling around with rapper Jay-Z, the media went wild. And now the outcome of their friendship and visit to Marcy housing project in Brooklyn, is the content of the new O magazine article. Jay-Z discusses drugs, music and married life with Oprah Winfrey in the O October 2009 issue, which hits newsstands on Tuesday, September 15.

Here are some blog snippets from the rapper and media mogul interview in their first interview together:

Winfrey: Do you believe that using the N word is necessary?

Jay-Z: Nothing is necessary. It’s just become part of the way we communicate. My generation hasn’t had the same experience with that word that generations of people before us had. We weren’t so close to the pain. So in our way, we disarmed the word. We took the fire pin out of the grenade.

Ron Howard / O Magazine

Jay-Z: It was natural…[dealing drugs @ a young age of 13]

Winfrey: Because drug dealers were your role models. There wasn’t a teacher or lawyer or nurse of doctor or and accountant in the neighborhood?

Jay-Z: Well, we were living in Marcy by then, so no. And if anyone did become something like that, they moved out. They never came back to share the wisdom of how they made it. If anyone made it, you never knew it. That’s why I’ve always said that if I become successful, I’d come back here, grab somebody, and show him how it can be done.

Winfrey: Can I ask how in the world you kept your wedding [to Beyonce] a secret?

Jay-Z: Late planning!

Winfrey: How many people knew?

Jay-Z: Very few. The sad part is that we offended some. But people who love you understand. Because at the end of the day, it’s your day.

Blige, Ozwald Boateng, Naomi Campbell, Oluchi, Tyson Beckford and Alek Wek appeared in the next leg of Thisday ‘Africa Rising’ Festival in Lagos, Nigeria. And the festival will move to Washington, DC on August 1, and then conclude in London, UK on October 13.

Rihanna graces the cover and pages of Instyle August issue, and she delves into her personal style. The issue hits newsstands on Friday, July 18.

On her style: I love to play to both sides of my personality – the girlie and the tough. That’s what makes my style different. … (Growing up in Barbados), I wore my brother’s clothes, dresses with sneakers, or no shoes at all. I would always get into trouble with my mom. She would say things to scare me like, ‘You’re going to get cut!’ But I couldn’t help it. I would climb trees, steal mangoes, catch birds—silly things that were fun to us at the time.

On her short hair: The first time I heard people were asking for the Rihanna, it was really flattering and maybe a little strange. It caught be by surprise, but now I feel it’s a very cool thing. I don’t feel the pressure to change it up again at all. I like it, as they like it.

On where she’ll be in 10 years: …In 10 years I want to have already started my family and have some business of my own. A fashion line, a makeup line, and I still want to be doing what I’m doing at a much bigger capacity—by the grace of God!

Thisday ‘Africa Rising’ Festival is set to project positive images of Africa by showcasing the renaissance of Africa’s music, fashion and the arts.
