Queen of Katwe Reserve Result Disney Film

Queen of Katwe is the colorful true story of a young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion. Directed by Mira Nair from a screenplay by William Wheeler based on the book by Tim Crothers — Queen of Katwe is produced by Lydia Dean Pilcher and John Carls with Will Weiske and Troy Buder serving as executive producers. The film stars David Oyelowo, Oscar® winner and Lupita Nyongo and newcomer Madina Nalwanga.

For 10-year-old Phiona Mutesi [Nalwanga] and her family, life in the impoverished slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda, is a constant struggle. Her mother, Harriet [Nyong’o], is fiercely determined to take care of her family and works tirelessly selling vegetables in the market to make sure her children are fed and have a roof over their heads. When Phiona meets Robert Katende [Oyelowo], a soccer player turned missionary who teaches local children chess, she is captivated. Chess requires a good deal of concentration, strategic thinking and risk taking, all skills which are applicable in everyday life, and Katende hopes to empower youth with the game. Phiona is impressed by the intelligence and wit the game requires and immediately shows potential. Recognizing Phiona’s natural aptitude for chess and the fighting spirit she’s inherited from her mother, Katende begins to mentor her, but Harriet is reluctant to provide any encouragement, not wanting to see her daughter disappointed. As Phiona begins to succeed in local chess competitions, Katende teaches her to read and write in order to pursue schooling. She quickly advances through the ranks in tournaments, but breaks away from her family to focus on her own life. Her mother eventually realizes that Phiona has a chance to excel and teams up with Katende to help her fulfill her extraordinary potential, escape a life of poverty and save her family.

Directed by Jon Favreau, based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s classic animated film, “The Jungle Book” is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli [Neel Sethi], a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan [voice of Idris Elba], who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera [voice of Ben Kingsley], and the free-spirited bear Baloo [voice of Bill Murray]. Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa [voice of Scarlett Johannsson], a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie [voice of Christopher Walken], who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire.

Brief:
What kind of magic blossoms when you put artists of every genre in one exhibition? When an outsider and an insider are side by side and the rules of the art world no longer apply? Will there be chaos? Complete anarchy? Or, will an exhibit as breathtaking as the cherry blossoms of spring blossom forth to usher in a new way of perceiving not only art, but also the world in which we all live. “I believe there is a wonderful connection between a work of art and the artist that created it. So, I have travelled the globe to put together this all-star group of artists with positive attitudes, happy hearts, and beautiful images that I can’t wait for you to see! YAY!!!” – The World’s Most Adorable Art Critic – Daniel Rolnik
We invite you to take that daring adventure with us on March 1st, 2014 from 6pm – 9pm at Flower-Pepper Gallery in Pasadena, CA.

Every artist in 春 [The Season of Spring] has created a work of art with the same starting point; a single piece of archival 8″x10″ paper enclosed in a clear mylar sleeve. They then sent their original artworks back to Flower-Pepper Gallery, where they were sealed with a header card. Because of this unique methodology of presentation, all of the artists asked to participate were able to hide surprises alongside their original artworks such as limited-edition zines and original pencil sketches. Thus, allowing fans that purchase art at 春 between March 1st, 2014 – April 4th, 2014 to experience their own private dialogue with the artist they’ve collected.
